| Information: Faisalabad (Urdu: فیصل آباد) is located in Punjab, Pakistan. Faisalabad is the third largest city in Pakistan with an estimated 2006 population of 2.6 million (city proper). The entire district had a population of about 5.4 million in 1998[3]. It is an important industrial centre located in the Punjab province, west of Lahore. The city-district of Faisalabad is bound on the north by the districts of Gujranwala and Sheikhupura, on the east by Sahiwal district, on the south by Toba Tek Singh district and on the west by Jhang district. Founded 1895 by Sir James Lyall as Lyallpur. In 1977 the city was renamed in honor of the recently assassinated King Faisal of Saudi Arabia. Faisalabad, formerly Lyallpur, city, northeastern Pakistan, in the Rechna Doab region of the Punjab. A rail and road junction, the city lies in an area watered by the Lower Chenab Canal, and in the area cotton, wheat, vegetables, and fruits are grown. It is an industrial center, having railroad-repair shops, engineering works, and plants that mill cotton, sugar, flour, and oilseeds, can fruit, and pack tea. Manufactures include superphosphates, cotton and silk textiles, hosiery, dyes, agricultural equipment, and ghee. Faisalabad is the site of the University of Agriculture (1909). Aided by an efficient irrigation system, it has earned a name for agricultural productivity. Out of total area of 14,43,703 acres of this district, 11,50,042 acres of land is irrigated through canals. The climate of the district touches two extremes. The maximum temperature in summer reaches upto 50°C or 122°F. In winter, it may, at times. fall below the freezing point. The mean maximum and minimum temperature in summer are 39 and 27°C respectively and in winter, 21 and 6°C respectively. The summer season starts from April and continues till October. May, June and July are the hottest months. The winter season, on the other hand, starts from November and continues till March. December, January and February are the coldest months. Industry Faisalabad district has made rapid strides in the field of industry after independence. It is now called the "Manchester of Asia" for its extensive development of textile industry. |
