Dera Ghazi Khan, central Pakistan, on the Indus canal. It is an administrative center in a wheat and millet area. Manufactures include textiles, processed foods, and rope. The town was founded in the late 15th cent. A college affiliated with Punjab Univ. is there.
Two prominent employers in Dera Ghazi Khan are the D.G.Khan Cement Company and the Al-Ghazi Tractor Company. It is considered that these companies, along with various other flour mills, companies in the cotton, chemical, and textile industries, and rice, sugar, and ghee mills, form the backbone of the Pakistani economy.
The Pakisani uranium extraction plant, located in the same region, was designed by Pakistani chemical, mechanical and electrical engineers from AEMC and other PAEC centers with the assistance from other Pakistani industrial concerns which manufactured certain key components. Construction of the uranium yellow cake plant was completed in short order, and the first yellow cake, which is a concentrated form of uranium, was produced at the plant within 12 months of the start of construction. |
