Temper is not a sin

I’m trapped inside this body
I can’t escape the pain
It’s so intense, so frightening
Yet it happens again and again

My friends tell me to escape
Escape the nightmare that I live
"It’s not as simple as that" I say
It’s my home and they’re my kids

I’m bruised and bashed so badly
It shows outside and in
It’s not his fault, its temper
And temper’s not a sin

I should try to clean up faster
Not let the kids be quite so loud
Then he wouldn’t hit me
Or push me to the ground

I’ll leave my husband one day
When the kids are all grown up
That way he cannot hurt them
But for now I must be tough

Today he came in such a state
Such an angry mood
I know he’s gonna beat me
Right after he gets his food

Such a flogging I’ve never had
I cried out for help, I screamed
But no-one came, no-one helped
Things are worse than they seemed

He won’t stop, it never ends
I cry from so much pain
My insides ache, I’m so afraid
From this, what does he gain

I looked at the kids and whispered
Don’t turn out like your dad
Then I saw him raise his fist
It wasn’t his fault, he was mad
