| Fast bowler Shabbir Ahmed has elected to stay in Pakistan to work on the bowling action that led to his international suspension in May. Shabbir was expected to travel to Australia for remedial work on his action after tests revealed that he exceeded elbow extension regulations. But the Pakistan Cricket Board said: "Woolmer is confident his action can be improved so we postponed Australia." Pakistan hope to have Shabbir back for the series with England in October. It was in the first Test in the West Indies in May that Shabbir was reported for a suspect action, his third warning since 1999. The 29-year-old, who has 46 Test and 33 one-day international wickets will not be allowed to return until the International Cricket Council's bowling action review committee have cleared his action. England and Australia head into the third Ashes Test at Old Trafford with skipper Michael Vaughan urging his team to continue to play "on instinct". Vaughan's men go to battle on Thursday having squared the series with a last- gasp win at Edgbaston. Brett Lee has proven his fitness after a knee infection, but Glenn McGrath is a doubt despite moving freely after tearing ankle ligaments a week ago. England have no injury doubts, but they may be tempted to play Chris Tremlett. The pitch in Manchester, expected to be hard and bouncy on the opening days before taking spin, could suit the tall, uncapped paceman, and swing bowler Matthew Hoggard could be the one to miss out. Lee's inclusion in the team mean Australia will not require uncapped duo Shaun Tait and Stuart Clark, the latter a call-up to the squad this week as cover.Assuming McGrath does not play, it seems Michael Kasprowicz and Jason Gillespie will be retained despite their moderate form and despite talk that leg-spinner Stuart MacGill could force his way into the side. But Ponting said he was "unlikely" to weaken the side's batting to accommodate another bowler, which bodes badly for MacGill as Australia would not partner Lee with only one other paceman. England's memorable win in Birmingham has them targeting a first Ashes series win since 1986/7. But Vaughan said: "I won't really try to complicate things. "If I start talking about what a massive game this is you get confused about the situation. "We tried to play in an instinctive manner at Edgbaston. For a young team, playing on instinct is always better than playing under pressure." England won the second Test at Edgbaston by just two runs after dominating a match that was brilliant throughout. It was England's first win in a 'live' Ashes Test since 1997. Old Trafford will do well to match the excitement there. But either way, this third Test has been lent a huge sense of occasion and there is frenzied anticipation around the country of what could happen now. How much spin the wicket takes is another vital factor. Old Trafford authorities insist it will not turn excessively for Shane Warne - who currently has 599 Test dismissals and returns to the ground which in 1993 shot him to stardom with the 'ball of the century' to Mike Gatting.England chose not to add a second spinner to their squad, which also suggests they are not overly concerned about any spin on offer. The groundstaff were eager to get the covers off the wicket soon after morning drizzle on Wednesday. It still had a green tinge to it which may offer some movement first thing on Thursday but both captains agreed there could be big runs on offer. The weather forecast is pretty good for the match - with occasional isolated showers on Saturday and sunny intervals the rest of the time. Vaughan said he was hoping to end a personal run of poor form while Ponting said his batsmen had not yet fired as a unit. World number one Roger Federer produced a near-perfect performance to beat Andy Roddick 6-2 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 and complete a hat-trick of Wimbledon titles. The 23-year-old joins Pete Sampras and Bjorn Borg as the only players to win three in a row in the open era. Federer was at his peerless best in the first set but Roddick fought hard in the second before his opponent stepped up a gear to take it on a tie-break.A rain delay failed to unsettle the Swiss, who broke once to seal glory. "It's a pity for Andy but I really did play my best," Federer told BBC Sport. "I'm very, very proud. This is the third time so it's very special. The first set looked set to be a tight affair when only one point went against serve in the first five games. But at 3-2, Federer piled on the pressure by finding a way to return some fearsome Roddick serves. Federer set up a second break point by firing Roddick's smash straight back past his opponent and took control when the American went long. The world number one made just one error and hit 15 winners in an awe-inspiring first-set display and rubber-stamped his dominance by breaking again to take it in 22 minutes. To his credit, Roddick did not buckle. When Federer suffered a brief lapse of concentration at 1-1 in the second, the second seed took his chance and broke for the first time in the match. The defending champion was quickly back into his stride and levelled proceedings at 3-3 but still, Roddick fought on. The American, approaching the net with increasing frequency, saved two set points at 4-5 and recovered from deuce at 5-6 bAnd looking to future matches against the champion, Roddick joked: "Maybe I'll just punch him or something." ut he was finally undone by the brilliance of his opponent in the tiebreak.
